Step 1: Plan Your Design

Measure the area to be tiled and calculate how many square metres you need by multiplying the width by the height of the area. Add 10% to your total for cuts and mistakes. Our tiles are sold by the box but you can input the number of m2 required on each product page so work out how many boxes you will need.

Top Tip: Once you have your tiles, lay your tiles out on a flat surface to visualize the pattern before starting. This is especially helpful for patterned tiles or those with colour variation.

Step 2: Prepare the Wall

Ensure your wall is clean, dry, and smooth. If the surface is porous, apply a primer to ensure the adhesive sticks properly. Remove any grease or dirt using a kitchen cleaner.

Step 3: Mark Your Starting Point

Use a spirit level to draw a horizontal line as your starting guide. Begin tiling from the centre of the wall or a natural focal point, such as the area above the sink or hob, and work outward.

Step 4: Apply Tile Adhesive

Mix the tile adhesive as per the instructions. Spread it onto the wall using a notched trowel, working on small sections at a time to prevent it from drying out. Press each tile into place firmly, using tile spacers to maintain even gaps.

Top Tip: Wipe off any adhesive that squeezes out between tiles before it hardens.

Step 5: Cut Tiles to Fit

Use a tile cutter or wet saw for precise cuts. Measure carefully for edges, corners, or around sockets. Smooth the edges with a tile file if needed.

Step 6: Allow Adhesive to Set

Once all the tiles are in place, let the adhesive cure for the recommended time (usually 24 hours). Check the manufacturer’s instructions for specific guidance.

Step 7: Grout the Tiles

Mix the grout and apply it using a grout float, pressing it into the gaps between tiles. Wipe away excess grout with a damp sponge before it dries, but be careful not to remove too much from the joints.

Step 8: Finish with Sealant

Apply silicone sealant along the edges where the tiles meet the countertop or walls. This prevents water from seeping behind the tiles and creates a clean finish.

Admire Your Work

Congratulations! You’ve just tiled your kitchen splashback. Step back and admire your handiwork. A beautifully tiled splashback not only protects your walls but adds a touch of personal style to your kitchen.
